The correct story on how the city got its name is quite uncertain. There are several accounts to the story as to how the city got its name. The first account is that the Captain Bonneville of the US Army and his party was trekking rough and arduous terrains for a couple of weeks already when they happen to chance upon the Boise River Valley. The guide who speaks French was so overwhelmed to see such glorious sight of Lush River after being in dry terrain for a couple of weeks that he shouted, “Les Bois!” twice. And that is how the city is believed to get its name. Another account would be that it was the French Canadian fur trappers who gave the city its name. While they set traps in the area where the city lies, the valley of the river filled with trees became a landmark for them and hence they called it as “La Riviere Boise”. Boise is the French word for wooded as bois is the French for wood. So what they called the place was “the wooded river”
